About the Morel Mushroom Season...

Understanding Your Equine Athlete's State of
Wellness - Part 3
The body, mind, and external factors surrounding
the horse you ride provide the initial framework
to determine where you can provide opportunities
to build your horse's Fitness in Motion.
The components of each category
can overlap as there is not a clean line
separating mind from body and everything about
the environment is computed and affects how each
of the other two components respond.

Aluminum VS
Steel: A
Closer Look
|
Topic:
|
Aluminum |
Steel
|
|
Strength |
To equal the strength of steel,
generally 50% more aluminum
structure is needed.
However, high quality aluminum
is pound-for-pound stronger than
steel. |
Generally, steel is stronger
than aluminum. However,
high quality aluminum is
pound-for-pound stronger than
steel. |
|
Weight |
Aluminum is lighter than steel
but can actually be stronger
with quality materials and
proper construction.
Aluminum is approximately 1/3 of
the density of steel.
|
Steel trailers have been around
longer than aluminum and have
stood the test of time.
Steel is a heavier material than
aluminum, it is denser by
approximately 2/3.
|
|
Fuel Economy |
Because aluminum is lighter, it
has better fuel usage and
efficiency in towing.
|
Because steel is heavier it can
decrease fuel efficiency.
|
|
Longevity |
Aluminum trailers do not rust,
which can increase their life.
Older trailers can oxidize and
if the aluminum is cheap and of
inferior quality, it can require
frequent acid baths.
|
Rust or oxidation can affect
your trailer. However,
with galvanized steel the
likelihood of rust is
reduced. Steel trailers usually
require more frequent exterior
maintenance.
|
|
Expense |
Aluminum is a more expensive
investment initially, however
infrequent repairs, fuel
efficiency and trade-in value
often make the initial expense
worthwhile. However,
aluminum repairs are more
expensive than steel repairs.
|
Steel is more cost efficient
than aluminum initially, however
fuel usage, repairs and tow
vehicle expense do impact the
overall price. Repairing
steel trailers is cheaper than
aluminum repair work.
|
|
Trade-In Value |
Aluminum trailers tend to hold
their value better than steel
units. |
Steel trailers tend to not hold
their value as effectively as
aluminum trailers.
|
|
Appearance |
Aluminum does not rust, however
cheap aluminum can oxidize and
require frequent acid baths.
Aluminum does not need to be
painted like steel. Aluminum is
an especially good
choice for very salty
environments.
|
Corrosion can cause rust spots
to be visible and
unsightly. Re-painting may be
necessary after a couple of
years of use depending
on weather conditions, etc. |

Q:
|
I have a question about my trailer
maintenance - what needs to be done this
spring? Thanks for your help.
Typically a trailer that has not been used
throughout the entire year should be
inspected each spring. A simple inspection
of the tires for inflation, wear and dry rot
is a good beginning.
Check all exterior running lights for
operation. Squirrels and mice love to
gnaw on wiring.
If you have interior dome lights give
them a try.
For trailers with wood floors, pull out
the mats and check for any deterioration
in the boards.
Inspect all handles and latches
including the frame for signs of
cracking.
I suggest that a trained service
technician inspect your brakes and brake
linings, wheel bearings and repair any
electrical items you may have found
during your own inspection.
Living Quarter Trailers require a much
more detailed service inspection and
de-winterizing.
Check out the service specials at Double
4 for all of your trailering needs.
