COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR HORSE - What Horse Sounds Mean

Although horses use mainly body language to communicate, vocalization does play a role in getting their message across.

Horses are usually quiet creatures, although there are a few exceptions, and they general only make noises when put into certain situations. Regardless of the horse, there are general reasons for most sounds that horses make.

Exhaling: Horses may sometimes make soft sighing noises which mean that they are simply relaxing. The noise is their sound for accompanying that release of pent up tensions.

Sharp Snorts: Sharp snorts can have one of two meanings. The horse may simply have gotten dust of some sort up its noise and is making an effort to clear it, or the horse may be alarmed and the snorts are a sign of that. In this case the horse's body language will make it clear as to which situation is occurring.

Deep vibrating snorts: These snorts tend to be deeper and longer than sharp snorts. [click here to continue reading]

HORSE CRIBBING

Horse Cribbing is definitely not a killer horse disease. However, this does not mean that it is any less worrisome. Cribbing is a habit that can be damaging to both your horse and your property.

What it Is Horse Cribbing?
Horse Cribbing is often considered an obsessive compulsive behavior. This is simply because the action is repetitively done by horses. When a horse cribs, it grabs a stationary object by its teeth, bares its teeth and sucks in air. This seems to be more than just an action that the horse has become used to. There seems to be some evidence that horses derive real satisfaction from the act. Cribbing as a repetitive behavior appears to release soothing natural chemicals into the brain.

Causes of Horse Cribbing
There are a number of cases that have been put forth as to the cause of horse cribbing. While it is possible that the habit may have been picked up from other horses, experts suggest that the habit has more to do with stress and feeding schedules.

WINTER GROOMING HELPS HORSES SHINE

A good daily grooming is essential for healthy horses-especially in winter. Daily grooming helps a horse build a healthy coat, fight off fungus and makes weight loss and wounds easier to spot. It also builds a strong bond between humans and horses.

As the weather cools and in some climates dampens, you'll need to pay particular attention to your horse's hooves. Horses that stand in damp paddocks develop thrush and scratches, both of which can be easily prevented with a little daily maintenance.

If you want to give your horse a bath when the weather is cool, you still can-provided you have a few of the right tools. Following is a brief guide to cool weather grooming and bathing techniques.
